A woman's worth

By Jasmine Rose, Thought Catalog

I don’t care if you call me ugly. Say it, I dare you. Mention the girth of my lips or the wide-set nature of my eyes. Maybe you’ll pick up on the flat scope of my nose or the jutting of my cheekbones. The ferociousness of my brows or my cocoa stained skin may tip you off to any perceived ugliness as well. But, I don’t care.

I know I’m beautiful, just don’t tell me so. If all that leaves is calling me ugly, then so be it. My beauty doesn’t lie with my looks, but in my refusal to give up in life’s journey. So, tell me that I’m ugly if you choose, then. I don’t care. There are worse things to be called than ugly. And it’s not being called a slut.

So, call me a slut. Is it my ability to appreciate God’s craftsmanship of the male species? I mean seriously, I don’t discriminate. Is it my willingness and consent to be loved and be a lover, though not married? Call me a slut then. There are worse things. I don’t understand why people think they harm with words like ugly and slut. Want to insult me? Call me dumb. Call me powerless. Call me inconsequential. You can’t hurt me with words like ugly or slut.

Because a woman’s worth doesn’t lie in her aesthetic or sexuality. It lies in her. It lies in her definition. And it lies in her definition of self. My definition of self is my intelligence, my power, and my significance. I am smart because I say I am. I have power because I know I do. I have significance because I am alive. But I didn’t always think this. I didn’t always know this. Words like ugly and slut held value.

But when it hurt worse to be called dumb, beauty and sexuality held no importance. It hurt worse to feel powerless. It hurt worse to feel inconsequential.

Society, even with all of its pro-feminism in popular culture, still gives to power to those who use ugly and slut to hurt. It’s cardinal to be considered ugly. It’s sinful to be a slut, even for those who give no importance to religions that discredit sexuality outside of marriage.

Society doesn’t give importance in girls knowing that they are smart, and capable and powerful. For the women, and I call us women and not females, since that word strips women of their humanity, (i.e. there are females in most species, but a woman is also a human), who know their worth in their definition of self in regards to what is important to them and not the values that are given significance to hurt others, it is great that you know who you are. Many do not. Many can still be hurt with ugly, or slut.

For the women that can be and are hurt with those words, do not feel victimized. It’s not okay that they use these words to hurt, but it’s okay that you feel hurt. It’s okay that you’re not okay. Everything is set up so that you do feel like a victim when these words are hurled at you, but don’t give your naysayers that power. When you know you are beautiful, then you are. What helped me was saying it until my beauty radiated out of me from my core. I took power away from the word ugly and slut and gave into my desire to be smart, powerful, and influential.

Lastly, to those who want to answer the challenge and call me dumb, powerless or inconsequential, I’ll remind you of my ability to call shenanigans on anyone who calls me out of my name or incorrectly defines me. Like I said, I’m smart, I’m powerful, and I’m consequential. So I am.

Daddy's birthday!

It's daddy's turn! =)

We celebrated his birthday a month back.. Haha yes it's a back-dated post again =p work has been so busy that time whizzed past so quickly! May is almost here... Wow~ time, you are moving too fast for me! Slow down..... My blogging speed can't catch up with you!

Ok back to daddy's birthday...

We had a family meal at A1 claypot nex together with Mr Koh, Gor Gor and Jiayi who met us there.. First time trying their food~ not bad.. We ordered many dishes to try! Haha..

Couple shot~
Yums....
Mummy's drooling at the sight of food.. Haha
Brought my family to our new house (though there's nothing there yet) after the meal.. And had a simple chill out session at the macs nearby, eating ice cream and drinking coffee =)

On daddy's birthday.. We baked a cake for him! Haha.. With our humble little oven... So proud of our oven, you can almost call it a toaster oven, yet it exceeded our expectations.. Gd job!

Birthday boy!
We decorated the cake ourselves too..

Posing with his darling..
Pose for cake cutting.. Haha
Then we asked daddy to make a wish before he blew out the candle.. And he went shy! Saying that only girls make wishes, and that guys don't... Haha.. So MCP =p

Nevertheless, we still forced him to.. Haha

Then daddy blew out the candle.. Still with his cupped hands (still making his wish) haha.. Mummy joined him too~
We took our mandatory group selfie! Haha..
Eat lo!
Presenting daddy and mummy with their couple birthday gifts - seiko automatic watches.. Haha! Cool shot~

Ending this post with a picture edited by daddy himself.. The self-proclaimed tech-savvy and know-it-all daddy.. Haha!

Our new house~

We finally collected the keys to our new house (on 21 February)..

Headed down to hdb office early, signed our cpf savings away, and collected this bunch of keys packed in a pretty cool organiser.. The day we became proud owners (or permanent tenants for 99 years =p) of this humble unit tucked in the east of Singapore~

There.. Can you see where Mr. Koh is pointing at..
We entered the house excitedly and did what most couples would do.. We rolled our beautiful ong lye (pineapple) and Huat kueh (how do you translate that? Haha self raising cake? =p), as part of the house warming ritual, upon entry to our new house.. Haha
Ong lye and Huat kueh.. Huat ah!
As part of the ritual, there were other things we did too.. Which was to sprinkle some items all over the house.. salt (to 'cleanse'), green beans (to 'sprout' for house full of kids and grand kids in future) - which it did, I mean the sprouting, but I'll share on that abit later.. Some rice too, so that we have enough to eat in future.. And tea leaves, which I'm not too sure what they signify.. Haha.. You'll be surprised that such info can be easily obtained through some internet research.. It's supposedly a belief passed from generations before~ we are not overly superstitious, but did all these to inject some fun as we entered our new home.. Rather than just plainly stepping into it.. Haha..

As usual, he got his wares ready..
A proud grown-up boy~
Photoshoot for the new house
While he was meddling with the equipments.. I took a short stroll around~

The kitchen.. See the green beans littered everywhere =p
Where we'll cook and do the laundry
The first bedroom
The second bedroom
The common toilet
Entering the master bed room
The cosy master bed room
The view from the master bed room window.. A primary school~
Guess we'll have the kids singing the national anthem as our additional 'alarm clock' in future too.. It could also be a sign to us that we are really late for work if we are still at home when we hear them sing.. Haha

We swept the house before we call it a day.. And it was also time for our well deserved dinner~

Our first dinner at the new place =)

More updates coming up soon~

Mummy's birthday!

We celebrated dearest mummy's birthday some weeks back.. We had Zhi char dinner and crabs coz mummy requested for it.. Haha! It's her birthday so we pampered her =)

My folks prefer simple Zhi char dinner over expensive dinners at restaurants.. Such are my parents~ Simple and easily contented.. although strict when bringing us up, they never requested or expected us to splurge on them.. My parents are so wonderful, supporting and showering me with unconditional love and teaches me how to be appreciative of life in their little ways~

Crabs!
Nom nom nom
On the night of mummy's birthday eve, sisi and I baked our first ever cake! Haha.. Take a look at our humble little oven toaster.. It can actually bake!!

We were like excited little kids, waiting for our cake to be baked! Ok we cheated a little, it was a pre-mix =p and all we had to do was to add water, beat an egg and add some milk.. And whisk away~~

*ting*
Our first cake!
We decorated the cake with some sugar hearts.. And it become a birthday cake for mummy! Haha.. This home-made cake beats any cake bought from outside.. It contains lots of love and effort from the little girls at home.. Haha..

Happy mummy!
The folks~ =)
All in~ in pyjamas at home.. Haha!

Happy birthday to my dearest mummy~ May good health and happiness surround you always! Stay sweet, beautiful and happy everyday.. I (and family) love you! =)

It's February 14..

February 14 - Valentine's Day..

Some hated this day, some dreamed about this day.. Some just couldn't be bothered.. Well 6 years ago on this day - Valentine's Day, we got together.. Pretty cliche to be attached on this day haha, but we did.. Thinking back to those happy and carefree days in school, not knowing what life after school would be like.. We seem to have grown up quite a bit, you can also say we aged a fair bit =p a new wave of young people on the streets slowly made us look like exhibits in the museum.. Haha..

Nevertheless, on 14 February, we went out for a nice dinner to celebrate our 6th year together~ we expected the crowds and exorbitant prices that restaurants will charge.. It had been like that every year.. Haha

Mr. Koh found a nice place to have dinner.. Tucked at the quiet corner of CHIJMES, we became carnivores that night.. Haha! I love meats (I do love my veges too), and Carnivore seemed like a nice place to feast away =)

Beautiful ambience, quiet surroundings.. We were away from the hustle and bustle, almost felt like we were at little Europe~

You may release the Tiger in me.. I smell meat! Haha
We were led to our table, and Mr Koh made himself comfortable..

Couple pic~ though a little blur
So pretty~
Like a boss
Yay! Champagne =)
Meats and champagne makes me happy.. Haha
Eat drink, eat drink.. All night long..

A variety of side dishes and skewered meats... I love their caramelised BBQ pineapple *drools*
We feasted from day till night.. And it was time for our gift exchange~
Spot the new toy.. Haha
Vouchers for me!
The night ended with delicious tiramisu cake topped with strawberries~ Yums!

Cheers~

Thank you Mr Koh for the carnivorous treat at such a nice place! Haha..

Happy 6th Anniversary to us too.. =)
